Charles Leclerc secured an impressive second place in the Mexican Grand Prix. The Ferrari driver held his ground against a pressing Max Verstappen in the final stages of the race, thereby earning his team valuable points in the battle for the constructors’ championship. Thanks to his podium finish, Ferrari now climbs to second place among the teams.
Leclerc spoke visibly relieved about his race afterwards: “I am very happy with this weekend. The American Grand Prix was already very positive for us, and to be on the podium again is a big surprise.” The Monegasque demonstrated that Ferrari has found the right direction after a challenging season phase, with a strong qualification and a solid race pace on Sunday.
In the closing laps, Verstappen was quickly closing in, but a Virtual Safety Car threw a spanner in the works for the Dutchman. Leclerc admits that the moment was crucial: “I was very happy with the virtual safety car. My tires were completely worn out and I saw Max getting closer and closer. So that safety car was my salvation.”
