Aston Martin is pulling out all the stops to firmly establish itself as a top team in Formula 1. The team is evolving into a full-fledged factory team, making significant investments in infrastructure, and bringing in top talent. Andy Cowell, former engine boss at Mercedes and now team boss at Aston Martin, speaks highly of team owner Lawrence Stroll’s vision and approach.
“Since Lawrence took over the team, he has been delivering on his promises,” Cowell tells the media in Singapore. “When you see the campus, the investments he has made in it, and his approach to attracting people like Adrian (Newey, ed.), you can see his determination.” According to Cowell, the message within the paddock is now clear: Aston Martin is no longer a midfield team, but a team with championship aspirations. “Everyone in the paddock now sees that determination. This is no longer a team trying to survive – we are here to win.”
Clear Vision Towards 2026
Aston Martin is looking beyond the current season. With Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso under contract until at least the end of 2026, the team has stability and experience ahead of the major regulatory changes scheduled for next year. “We are fortunate to have Lance and Fernando – two experienced drivers who will support us until at least the end of 2026,” explains Cowell. “This allows us to have open discussions about next year’s car and the one after that.”
At the same time, there is hard work going on behind the scenes to build a car that every top driver would want to drive. “When I talk to Adrian Newey and the engineers, it’s clear what we want: a really fast car,” says Cowell. “We want every driver with a super license to be lining up to drive for us.”
