The 23-year-old Luke Browning is once again given the opportunity to showcase his talent in Formula 1. The young Brit, currently active in Formula 2 and also a member of the Williams training school, will take the wheel of Carlos Sainz’s car during the first free practice for the Mexican Grand Prix. Browning, in accordance with current rookie rules, also drove a few test laps for the British team during the Bahrain leg.
During the first free practice for the Bahrain Grand Prix, Browning made his debut in the FW47, arguably the most competitive car in recent Williams history. He clocked the thirteenth fastest time, quicker than all other rookies who participated in that session. In Mexico City, he gets a second chance to prove himself. The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez is traditionally a popular location to tick off the mandatory rookie sessions. All teams are required to field an inexperienced driver during FP1 four times a year.
‘Great Opportunity’
“I am extremely grateful to have the opportunity to participate in a free practice session with Williams and experience the FW47 again,” Browning said in an official press release. “I have worked hard on my preparation for this session and want to make the most of this great opportunity – I can’t wait to get back in a Formula 1 car.” The young Brit combines his Formula 1 work with a strong season in Formula 2, where he currently ranks third in the championship with two race weekends to go – in Qatar and Abu Dhabi.
Williams’ Sporting Director Sven Smeets is full of praise for Browning’s development. “Luke has so far had a strong season in Formula 2 and has consistently shown his speed on various circuits and under different conditions,” he added. “He has continued to support the team with his simulator work and the TPC program, which has prepared him well for his next free practice. We look forward to seeing him in action in Mexico as he continues to build his experience with Williams.”
