Former Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone has named Oscar Piastri as the best driver in the current field – after Max Verstappen. The 94-year-old Brit praised the young Australian for his maturity and ability to learn from mistakes, which according to Ecclestone, distinguishes good from exceptional drivers. The praise comes at a crucial moment in the title fight; Piastri has lost ground in the last two races to Lando Norris and Max Verstappen.

“He (Piastri) gets the job done,” Ecclestone said in an interview with Sport.de. “When he makes mistakes, he knows he’s made them. He doesn’t blame others and doesn’t make excuses. And what’s even more important: he doesn’t make them twice. He’s the best driver after Max Verstappen.” Piastri made a big impression in 2025. The McLaren driver took the lead in the world championship after the GP of Saudi Arabia and has not let go of it since.

However, the Australian is under great pressure. His lead over Lando Norris is only 22 points, while Max Verstappen has reduced the gap to 63 points. After a difficult start to the season, the Dutchman seems to be re-entering the title fight. According to Ecclestone, however, Piastri remains the favorite for the world title. He also emphasizes the role of McLaren – and CEO Zak Brown – in the recent success.

Zak Brown’s Talent

Lando Norris and Norris are fortunate to be with the right team at the right time,” said the former F1 supremo. “In the past, there have been drivers who may have been better than the current generation, but never got the chance to show it.” According to Ecclestone, Zak Brown also plays a key role in McLaren’s revival. “Zak is doing very well,” Ecclestone concluded with a wink. “I’ve known him for a long time and recently told him, ‘I don’t think you’re very talented, but one of your talents is that you choose the right people to work for you.’

However, Brown’s role has been under scrutiny in recent days. In a London court, McLaren has sued IndyCar champion Alex Palou. The Spaniard broke his contract with the British IndyCar team because he saw no future in a Formula 1 seat due to the arrival of Oscar Piastri. Palou argued that he was promised a seat in the premier class and that Brown initially did not even want to contract the Australian.
