The Singapore Grand Prix has long been known as one of the most grueling races on the calendar. Drivers often emerge from their cars exhausted, drenched in sweat, overheated, and sometimes even dehydrated. It’s no surprise, then, that Formula 1 continues to seek ways to alleviate the physical strain. One of the latest innovations is the so-called cooling vest – a thin, actively cooled underlayer worn beneath the racing suit. However, not all drivers are immediately convinced.

Lewis Hamilton seems to primarily doubt the comfort of the cooling vest, despite its potential benefits. “I’ve never used the cooling vest during an official session, but I’m going to try it,” said the seven-time world champion in Singapore. “It’s quite uncomfortable. It’s rather itchy, so I’m not sure if I want to drive with an itchy top on.”

Carlos Sainz, now a veteran on the Marina Bay street circuit, reacts pragmatically. “It’s a two-hour race. I’ve done Singapore ten times,” said the Williams driver. “If the cooling vest breaks or doesn’t work, I’m not worried. I’ll just do the race and jump out fresh as always. But if it works, of course, it’s a nice bonus – then you suffer just a little less.”

Hülkenberg is Convinced

Not everyone is as skeptical. Nico Hülkenberg points to the effect he saw earlier this year with Alexander Albon. “After the race in Jeddah, I was wrecked. It was scorching hot,” he recalled the race in Saudi Arabia. “I sat next to Alex on the plane afterwards. He had worn that vest and was as fresh as can be. So I thought: next time I’ll use that thing too.” Although the vest can theoretically make a difference in extreme heat, practice still has to show whether it really provides an advantage during the race. One thing is certain: according to some drivers, it’s not yet comfortable.”
