Racing Bulls rookie Isack Hadjar shares the Formula 1 grid with his idol, seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. The young Parisian has repeatedly emphasized his admiration for the seasoned British driver. In a new interview, Hadjar explains what it’s like to become friends with his role model, and what sets Hamilton apart from other great champions in Formula 1.

“Hamilton has always been my great example,” Hadjar told French CLIQUE. “He has never won a title by racing unfairly – with him it was always a man-to-man fight, and always fair play. In Formula 1, he really is my role model, along with Ayrton Senna.” The French-Algerian rookie underscored his admiration for Lewis’ journey to the top. “If there’s anyone on the grid who has truly earned his spot through hard work and determination, it’s him,” Hadjar assured. “Everyone knows his story, it’s incredibly inspiring. And besides, as a person, he’s really a good man.”

Relationship with an Idol

It’s evident from social media and photos from the paddock that Hadjar and Alexander Albon are increasingly spending time together. The interviewer delved deeper into the relationship that the Racing Bulls debutant now has with his hero. “We obviously see that you’re finally racing alongside your idol, but at the same time, I get the impression that Hamilton is glad to have someone like him in Formula 1,” he suggested. “He must be thinking: ‘Finally, a regular guy like me.’

“I hope so,” responded Hadjar with a laugh. “Of course, there is an age difference – he’s twenty years older than me. I can say that we’re friends, but at the same time, there’s a kind of barrier. Still, I think he enjoys interacting with a young supporter of his, even though we’re equals, especially on the track. That’s where I try to really challenge him – out of respect for him,” concluded Hadjar.
