Oscar Piastri is left puzzled after the qualifying round in Baku. The Australian was unable to complete his qualifying session due to a crash in turn three of the street circuit, but he is still unsure how he ended up in the barriers with his MCL39 in Q3. ‘That lap didn’t feel any different from all the other fast laps,’ says the championship leader.
Oscar Piastri’s crash in the Baku qualifying session resulted in a record number of red flags. The qualifying session in Azerbaijan was halted for the sixth time, while the Australian luckily climbed unharmed from his MCL39. A disappointing end to Saturday for championship leader Piastri, who had noticed an upward trend before the crash.
“Friday was very tough, but today I felt much better in the car. I was happy with how I performed,” the Australian tells the media in Azerbaijan after qualifying. “It was difficult to tie all the ends together, but the potential was there. That was the most important thing. I wasn’t entirely convinced of that on Friday. So I felt better in the car, but I think I ultimately wanted too much.”
Piastri Puzzled
Piastri is still unsure exactly how he ended his qualifying session in the third turn of the street circuit. “I don’t know exactly what I did differently than in the previous rounds, because I don’t feel like I approached that round very differently,” the driver continues. “However, sometimes a small thing can make a big difference. It was drizzling a bit and there were gusts of wind, so maybe that contributed. For now, I have no idea. In any case, I don’t want to place the blame anywhere else but on myself for now.”
