Lewis Hamilton has no plans to start a family while he is still active in Formula 1. The seven-time world champion turned forty in January, but remains fully focused on racing. He assumes that he, like colleagues Max Verstappen and Nico Hülkenberg, will become a father someday, but not at the expense of his time in the premier class.
In a candid interview with L’Équipe, Lewis Hamilton addressed the ongoing rumors about his retirement. After a disappointing first half of the season with Ferrari, the British star was increasingly linked to a departure from Formula 1. Consequently, his other ambitions, such as starting a family, were also discussed. He expressed his admiration for other athletes who manage to balance sports and children, but he himself refuses to burden his offspring with his Formula 1 obligations.
‘Focusing on One Thing’
“I have always been impressed by Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and other greats like Tom Brady, athletes who have a family and continue to perform,” said Hamilton. “For me, that just hasn’t happened yet – for now, my niece and my family are my priority. I don’t do things by halves, and as long as I’m in Formula 1, I can’t commit one hundred percent to a family,” he explained.
“I’m not saying others don’t do that,” added the Ferrari driver. “But I have to be persistent, train, be super diligent, and fully commit. That’s why I don’t want to have to choose. Either racing suffers because of the family, or the family suffers because of racing,” Hamilton stated emphatically. “For now, fortunately, I don’t have to choose and I’m glad I can focus on one thing.”
