Lewis Hamilton has spoken out about the situation in Gaza. The seven-time world champion says he can no longer stand by and watch, and is urging his social media followers to donate to charities in the area. “It’s hard not to feel powerless in the face of so much tragedy, but we can’t stand still,” says the Ferrari driver.
Lewis Hamilton posted his call to action on Tuesday in his Instagram stories. “The situation in Gaza is deteriorating by the day,” the seven-time world champion begins. “In the past two years, more than ten percent of the population has been killed or injured – including tens of thousands of children – and that number is only increasing. The recent incursion into Gaza City has displaced hundreds of thousands of people.”
“Hospitals in the Gaza Strip are already overflowing with people suffering from famine and victims of bombings that just don’t seem to stop,” the Ferrari driver continues. “Today, the UN investigation commission described what is happening in Gaza as genocide. As people, we cannot stand by and let this happen.”
Call to Action
Hamilton is therefore calling on his followers to donate money to charities in Gaza. “It’s hard not to feel powerless in the face of such tragedy, but we cannot sit idly by. There are a number of fantastic organizations doing incredible work to help the people in Palestine, and they need funds to do so,” he said. The seven-time world champion has already made donations to Doctors Without Borders, Palestine Red Crescent, and Save the Children UK. “If you feel you can spare something, I would appreciate it if you would join me.”
This is not the first time the driver has spoken out on social issues. Hamilton has previously voiced his views on human rights in the context of the Black Lives Matter movement, and made a statement by wearing a rainbow helmet.
