Red Bull team boss Laurent Mekies agrees with his colleague Toto Wolff. The Mercedes team boss compared Red Bull’s engine project to climbing Mount Everest in Zandvoort, and therefore anticipates a significant challenge for the racing team in 2026. Mekies agrees with Wolff in Monza: ‘But Red Bull often does these kinds of crazy things’.

Toto Wolff made his comments about rival Red Bull in Zandvoort. When the Austrian was asked about the potential competitors of his racing team in 2026, Wolff did not include Red Bull in his list. “That’s because they will be shit,” the team boss said with a wink and a reference to the Red Bull Powertrains project. Under this banner, Red Bull is developing its own power sources for 2026, with the help of Ford.

“They have a Mount Everest to climb,” Wolff continued in a more serious tone. “Our own engine department has grown over decades. If you look at how the Red Bull engine came about, it was mainly because Christian Horner was not waiting for the relationship with Porsche.” Laurent Mekies – Horner’s successor who was fired in July – agrees with Wolff on the first point.

Mekies Agrees with Wolff

“Toto is right that it is indeed like climbing Mount Everest,” the Frenchman begins in Italy. “It’s an incredible challenge, but Red Bull often does these kinds of crazy things. We do not underestimate how difficult it is, especially since the other engine suppliers have years of experience. We certainly expect to have to work hard and have sleepless nights in the first year. But it remains a true Red Bull challenge.”
