Is Max Verstappen considering a move to Ferrari? Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Vettel, and now Lewis Hamilton. It has become a tradition for multiple world champions to try their luck at Scuderia after achieving success with their own racing teams. However, for Verstappen, the ‘pure’ drive for Ferrari is not enough. ‘I will only go if I see a chance to win,’ reveals the driver.
Lewis Hamilton is currently in his first season with Ferrari. The Brit made the move after more than a decade of loyal service at Mercedes – and winning six driver titles with the Silver Arrows – to the famous Italian team. Hamilton is not the first world champion to take the leap to Scuderia. Among others, Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel preceded him.
However, aside from success in the sprint races, things have not been going so smoothly for Hamilton at Ferrari. Max Verstappen, however, does not want to judge his British colleague too harshly. “It’s always difficult to know exactly what’s going on. I don’t know how he worked at Mercedes, I don’t know how he feels personally, and I also don’t know what’s going on within the team,” the Dutchman tells the Italian media. “I don’t have information about all these things. The point is that he has gone to a team that already had a very strong driver in Charles Leclerc.”
When Max Verstappen is subsequently asked if he would ever consider a move to Ferrari, he hesitates. “I don’t know. They already have two drivers for next year, so there are no discussions at the moment. Is there a chance? Yes, there are always opportunities in life, for every decision. That’s not the case right now, but who knows. I don’t even know how long I will continue to race in Formula 1, so there are still many questions for me.”
‘Only to Win’
What the world champion does know is that if he were to move to Maranello, he would do it for one reason only. “Ferrari is a huge brand and drivers naturally think: ‘I would like to drive for Ferrari’, but I believe that’s where the danger lies. Simply driving for Ferrari is a mistake. Because if you want to drive for Ferrari, you really have to go there to win. If I ever wanted to go to Ferrari, it wouldn’t be just to drive for Ferrari. No, it would be because I see the chance to win there.”
