A singer by profession, born and raised in Zandvoort. In other words, Yves Berendse. The man behind big hits like ‘Zin in jou’, ‘Terug in de tijd’, and ‘Nachtenlang’ was one of the attractions at the Dutch GP last Sunday. In fact, besides performing in the fan zone, he also showcased his vocal talents on the grid before the start. “This is definitely one of the highlights of my career.”
You no longer live in Zandvoort, but can you describe the impact of Formula 1’s return?
“It’s so important for Zandvoort that it has been in the news in a positive way in recent years, both nationally and internationally. There was a time when Zandvoort, let’s put it politely, was not exactly the most beautiful and chic seaside resort in our country. Before the war, it was really beautiful, if you go by old photos and stories. At some point, there was a decline, but fortunately, they have made a huge catch-up in recent years. Partly thanks to Formula 1. There have been significant strides forward. And when I see what this all does for and means to the people who live here and all the entrepreneurs, it’s truly unprecedented. Everyone loves it. I don’t think there’s anyone who doesn’t enjoy this.”
And Zandvoort is back on the map…
“Absolutely! And how! Images of Formula 1 in Zandvoort are broadcast all over the world. Formula 1 has really meant a lot for Zandvoort. If you come from abroad and you think, I’m going to take my family to the Netherlands and you want to go to a seaside resort, Zandvoort is the first name that comes to mind. And as I said, it hasn’t always been like this. In short, it’s a shame that Formula 1 is leaving, but let’s enjoy it one last time next year.”
