What is it like for newly appointed Red Bull team boss Laurent Mekies to work with Max Verstappen? Although the Frenchman has only been at the helm of the Austrian racing team for two Grand Prix weekends, Mekies is extremely pleased with the Dutchman’s way of working. ‘Max is even more exceptional outside the car than inside,’ reveals Mekies.

Shortly after the British Grand Prix, the decision was made at Red Bull: Christian Horner was immediately dismissed as team boss. Laurent Mekies was allowed to take over immediately, and has therefore already been at the helm of the Austrians for two race weekends. Although the Frenchman has not worked with Max Verstappen for very long, Mekies is already deeply impressed by the four-time world champion.

‘Max is exceptional’

“After working with him for four weeks, I can definitely say this: Max is even more exceptional outside the car than inside,” the French team boss tells De Telegraaf. “What he shows on the track is beyond doubt.” According to Mekies, Verstappen is particularly exceptional because of his ability to multitask, how well he feels the car, his dedication, and the way he can critically look at himself.

“And then there’s the way he communicates with the team behind closed doors,” Mekies continues his praise. “In a constructive and positive way, he can indicate what we need to take the next step. That is so important for the team. A driver who maintains the same level of discipline and dedication in good times, but especially in difficult moments. As a team boss, you just want to make even more use of him.”
