Fernando Alonso has stated that he is indifferent to how some new Formula 1 fans perceive him or the sport. The Spaniard dismisses comparisons to the new Hollywood film F1: The Movie, in which Brad Pitt plays an older driver who makes a comeback and wins. He emphasizes that his focus is solely on performance and his team.
Alonso dismisses any parallels between the successful F1 movie and his own career or that of fellow veteran Nico Hülkenberg. “Honestly, I don’t think Nico or I are concerned about what the new generation of fans thinks,” Alonso tells Speedcafe. “We are just trying to win races, work as well as possible with our team, and deliver performances. People outside the paddock don’t always see the full picture. The difference is often made by the car, not just the driver.”
According to Alonso, the perception many new fans have is often misleading. “If Nico and I have a winning car next year and we win eight races in a row and fight for the championship, some will think that we ate something different in the winter, followed a different training program, or learned to drive in the winter.”
But the reality is, of course, different, Alonso adds. “We train every day, eat healthily every day, travel every day, and spend time in the simulator every day. Every day we try to improve with our team. And when we achieve results, we share that with our team. Of course, we try to share that with our fans as well, but they are not our priority. That may sound harsh because we love our fans, but in the end, it’s all about performance with our team.”
