Lewis Hamilton has caused ‘too much drama’ at Ferrari this season, according to former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher. The seven-time world champion had a difficult first half of the season with the Italian team, entering the summer break after a disappointing twelfth place in both the qualifying and the race at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
In Budapest, Hamilton described himself as ‘useless’ and even suggested that Ferrari should change drivers. These comments led to speculation about a possible early departure, although according to Schumacher, there are currently no concrete indications that Hamilton will leave before the end of his contract in 2026.
Speaking to Bild, Schumacher stated that the Ferrari SF-24 clearly suits the driving style of Charles Leclerc, who has been with the team since his debut in 2018. “I said before the season that this could go wrong. At the moment, I see a lot of drama with him. He has publicly criticized the team, used harsh words internally, and struggled with the car – that helps no one,” said Schumacher.
‘Choice for Leclerc was made a long time ago’
He continued: “The car suits Leclerc, not him. Maybe he’s too old to adapt, or he just can’t handle it. I believe the choice for Leclerc was made a long time ago. But I don’t think he’ll throw in the towel this season.”
Leclerc has achieved all five of Ferrari’s podium finishes this season and leads the head-to-head qualifying duels and races in which both drivers are classified with a 24-8 score.
According to Schumacher, Hamilton is trying to exert a significant influence on the team’s direction by providing extensive feedback on technical and organizational improvements. “He’s trying to be the ‘shadow team boss’,” Schumacher stated. However, he believes Ferrari values Leclerc’s input more. “Maybe we’ll see the old Hamilton again next year,” said Schumacher.
