Oscar Piastri remains displeased about the penalty he received a few weeks ago from the race direction during the British Grand Prix. This became evident in Belgium, where the McLaren driver once again reflected on the controversy surrounding the race in Silverstone.
What Happened
Piastri seemed to be on his way to a certain victory in Britain a few weeks ago, but a 10-second penalty for braking during a safety car phase cost him the race. This ironically handed the victory to his teammate and title rival, Lando Norris.
Just as the safety car lights went out, Piastri slowed down significantly: from 218 km/h to 52 km/h. Max Verstappen had to swerve to avoid him, prompting the race direction to issue a penalty that many considered excessive. The Australian himself agreed with this sentiment.
What Followed
“I’ve had discussions with the FIA over the past few weeks, we’ve talked about the penalty. I now have an understanding of why and how it happened, but I still have my own opinion about it,” Piastri is clearly still not amused. “I’ve done this countless times before, as have others,” he said in Spa. “But well, I now know how we can and should handle this in the future. Now, the focus is on this weekend.”
