Laurent Mekies reveals the crucial role Max Verstappen plays within Red Bull. The Frenchman hopes to provide the Dutchman with ‘the best possible car’ to keep him at the Austrian racing team. ‘We need his magic on the track,’ Mekies candidly admits.
Laurent Mekies is at the helm of Red Bull for the first time during a race weekend in Belgium. The Frenchman follows in the footsteps of the dismissed Christian Horner. Max Verstappen is looking forward to working with the ‘smart’ Mekies. “I like Laurent, and I get along well with him,” the four-time world champion said at Spa. This is good news for the newly started Mekies, as the team boss naturally wants to keep the Dutchman at Red Bull.
The ‘Magic’ of Verstappen
“The truth is that Red Bull is hugely committed to Max,” Mekies tells Formula1.com. “The way we can show our enormous commitment to Max is by giving him the best possible car. And giving him the best possible car is what everyone at Red Bull wants to do more than anything else. We all put a lot of effort into this, and the rest follows naturally. Of course, Max is central to the project, he is the key to the project and we need his magic on the track.”
Although Mekies has only been working as Red Bull’s team boss for two weeks, the Frenchman is convinced that his racing team can develop the right car for Verstappen. “I think the team has everything it takes to do that,” the team boss adds. “It has the resources. It has the right attitude. And most importantly, it has the talents. In short, I think we have everything to give the best possible car to our drivers.”
