Former team boss Günther Steiner believes that his former Haas driver Mick Schumacher has a serious chance of securing a seat with Cadillac. The American team will be on the starting grid for the first time next year as the eleventh team, but has not yet announced which drivers will be behind the wheel. According to Steiner, Schumacher, with his experience as a test driver at Mercedes, could be a valuable addition to Cadillac.

Mick Schumacher drove for Haas in Formula 1 between 2021 and 2022, under the leadership of Günther Steiner. However, his time in the premier class was not very successful, with only 12 World Championship points earned over two seasons. As a result, Schumacher had to make way for Nico Hülkenberg at the end of 2022 and has since been waiting for a chance to return to Formula 1. The young German has previously stated that he is having ‘positive talks’ with the upcoming eleventh team on the grid, Cadillac, about a possible comeback.

Although Günther Steiner was critical of the German at the end of 2022 – “He grows with us, but cannot make us grow as a team” – he now sees the former Haas driver as a good contender for that coveted Cadillac seat. “I think Mick really has a chance,” Steiner tells RTL. “Cadillac needs a driver with Formula 1 experience, and there are currently not many drivers without a job, but with this experience.”

Steiner’s Favourite Candidates

According to the Italian, the younger Schumacher is a ‘hard worker’ and a ‘very nice guy’. “When he was a test driver at Mercedes, he wasn’t racing, but he learned a lot about a good, large team,” Steiner continues. “This knowledge of how a successful team operates can help Cadillac.” Schumacher left Mercedes as a test and reserve driver at the end of 2024 and was succeeded by Valtteri Bottas. The Finn, according to Steiner, is also a good candidate for Cadillac.

“I don’t think they’ll choose an American driver, as the risk is simply too high,” adds the South Tyrolean. “These guys have no experience in Formula 1, and that could quickly cause problems for Cadillac. Sergio Pérez, Valtteri Bottas, and Zhou Guanyu. They all have experience in Formula 1. Along with Mick Schumacher, they are my favourite candidates for Cadillac.”
