Over the course of 75 years, Formula 1 has provided countless memorable moments. Some have brought tears, others laughter, but all are forever etched in our collective memory. In this series, key figures from Dutch motorsport share their favourite memories from the rich history of Formula 1. PART 5: Nicky Catsburg.

Allard Kalff also has his favourite moments. The presenter and former racing driver grew up with motorsport, is a pure enthusiast, and has worked as a reporter and commentator in the premier class. “Of course, people will quickly think of the race weekend in Imola in 1994,” he points to the San Marino GP, where Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger lost their lives. “Understandably, that’s something that will stay with everyone.”

For Kalff personally, the Dutch GP stands out as a special moment, both in the past and now. “Firstly, because of the 1973 edition, I was there. It was the year Roger Williamson lost his life, which made a huge impression.” Kalff later became one of the initiators of the memorial in Zandvoort for not only Williamson but also Piers Courage, who died on the same circuit three years earlier.

“But there are also very fond memories of Formula 1 in Zandvoort. Like the return of the Dutch GP a few years ago. Then I was allowed to welcome the spectators on the circuit as a commentator on Friday. And I did:

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. A very warm welcome to the circuit here in Zandvoort. Today is the day we thought would never come, but I am so glad it has arrived. Welcome to the Formula 1 Grand Prix of the Netherlands!'”
