Fernando Alonso is looking forward to the remainder of the season with renewed energy, despite Aston Martin’s disappointing start to the season. With master designer Adrian Newey fully engaged in the design for 2026, the Spaniard is more motivated than ever to make a strong impression at the season opener.

Aston Martin is currently experiencing its toughest season in years, with only 22 points from the first 10 races. The AMR25 is primarily running in the midfield and the back of the pack. This is a stark contrast to 2023, when Fernando Alonso achieved eight podium finishes and the Silverstone-based team finished fifth in the constructors’ championship. For the Spaniard, it’s even his worst season start since 2017. However, the upward trend seems to have started: he finished ninth in his home race and impressively finished seventh in Canada.

Master designer Adrian Newey has been brought in and has already had some influence on the current car, but his focus is primarily on the design for next season. Reflecting on the situation, Alonso said that the rest of 2025 will mainly be about forging a team that is ready to fully benefit from Newey’s design in 2026.”It has been a challenge, but we now understand and know what the problem with the car is. However, we must not focus too much on solving the problem,” Alonso told the media present. “Because we need to think about the future and 2026, but even if it may be too late, we will try to do better in the second half of the year, and much of our motivation for next year comes thanks to him.”

Confidence

Alonso is looking forward to next season with renewed energy, as 2025 is largely seen as a transition year. However, the 43-year-old veteran warns that it is important to remain realistic and not to draw hasty conclusions. “With all the difficulties we have had this year and the problems we are facing, it gives us enough confidence to look forward to 2026, and expectations will be high, but we must keep both feet on the ground, because we know how far behind we are now,” he said. “Even though we now have a fast car, there are a few areas in which we need to continue to improve, so we are trying to use 2025 to address these and prepare for Newey.”
