George Russell has yet to secure a new contract for the upcoming Formula 1 season. Toto Wolff has repeatedly confirmed his satisfaction with the British driver, who has already scored valuable points for the Silberpfeile this year. However, he has not yet offered George Russell a new contract — possibly due to Max Verstappen‘s looming departure from Red Bull. Christian Horner has reportedly already held ‘exploratory talks’ with Russell.
Although team boss Toto Wolff publicly expresses his satisfaction with Russell, Max Verstappen casts a shadow over their collaboration. The Dutchman is under contract with Red Bull until 2028, but through an exit clause — which could come into effect during the summer break — the collaboration could be terminated prematurely. Many experts assume that Mercedes would immediately strike if Verstappen becomes available, even if it would be at the expense of Russell.
According to The Race, Russell and Red Bull team boss Christian Horner have already held ‘informal talks’ in recent weeks. These talks were primarily intended to gauge the mutual situation. Serious negotiations about a contract or racing seat are not yet on the table. However, it remains notable that Russell is keeping his options open, especially since Wolff seems to be stringing him along — as long as Verstappen is in the picture.
‘Mercedes satisfied with current line-up’
In the Beyond the Grid podcast, test and reserve driver Valtteri Bottas was asked about the situation at Mercedes. The eccentric Finn rejoined the German racing team this year. He could not say much about the contract situation, but did express his confidence in the current line-up. “Realistically, I think Mercedes and Toto Wolff are quite satisfied,” Bottas said.
“Kimi (Antonelli) is making progress,” explained Bottas. As a reserve driver, he is closely involved in the learning process of the young Italian. “Yes, he has had a few difficult moments lately, but that’s part of it. I think he’s more of a long-term investment.” He was also positive about George Russell: “George (Russell) is doing great — he’s consistent and gets the most out of the car. So, I wouldn’t see any reason for change if I were the team manager.”
Reportedly, Christian Horner – in case Max Verstappen leaves Red Bull – has already had ‘exploratory talks’ with George Russell (Red Bull Content Pool).
