McLaren demonstrated excellent performance in both free practice sessions on Friday, yet Lando Norris is tempering expectations at Imola. “We are often fast on Fridays. Then others overtake us on Saturday. Hopefully, we’ll find something extra,” he said.

Coming first and second in the free practice sessions doesn’t necessarily translate into race success. Therefore, Norris is not counting his chickens before they hatch, he is not underestimating the competition. Yet, McLaren seems to have the fastest car for the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix.

“I’m quite happy with today,” he said after the second free practice session. “It’s not easy to get into a rhythm on this track, timing is so important. But it was a good day, hopefully, we’ll find something extra for tomorrow.”

He implies that this will be necessary to stay ahead of the competition. “Especially in FP2 we are always good, we seem much faster than others and they often catch up with us on Saturday. Or they get close. So I’m not entirely confident, we still have work to do.”
