TV personality and former professional basketball player, Chatilla van Grinsven, spent several years in the United States, where she studied political science and international business. These studies, among other things, sparked her interest in Formula 1 as a sport. “It’s fascinating how sport, show, economy, and diplomacy all come together in this world,” she says.
Chatilla, how do you follow the sport and this season?
“I try to follow Max Verstappen as closely as possible. I’m not glued to the TV for every Grand Prix, but when I have the chance, I definitely watch. What also appeals to me about this sport is the enormous technical complexity, but especially the way entire teams, with hundreds of people, fully commit to making one driver perform at their best. This dedication and precision, all in service of one athlete, is truly remarkable to see.”
You studied political science and international business. Do these aspects also appeal to you in Formula 1?
“Absolutely! Formula 1 is so much more than just racing. It’s geopolitics, innovation, marketing, and big business all in one. Consider how countries profile themselves through races or how teams deal with international regulations. I find it fascinating how sport, show, economy, and diplomacy all come together in this world.”
Do you think we will ever see a female F1 driver?
“Not only do I hope so, I expect it! The W Series and now the F1 Academy are important steps in the right direction. There are plenty of girls with talent, it’s now a matter of creating equal opportunities in the development process. As a former professional athlete, I know how important visibility and support are. The days of ‘only men in fast cars’ are truly over.”
