Another podium finish for George Russell! The Mercedes driver was once again the best of the rest during the Miami Grand Prix – he only had to concede to the two McLaren drivers. The Brit benefited from a virtual safety car, but nonetheless drove a strong race in Florida. After the disappointments in the sprint, a podium finish made up for a lot, he said afterwards. In the standings, Russell has closed the gap to rival Max Verstappen to just six points.
“I’m very happy with the third place,” George Russell responded after the race. “I’ve been struggling a bit with my performance all weekend. To then achieve such a result at the last minute is, of course, very good. I can only congratulate McLaren, they are really on another level.” Russell was lucky with a virtual safety car, but then also managed to keep Max Verstappen behind him. “I stayed calm and felt very comfortable with the car,” he continued. “That certainly helped.”
Interviewer Jenson Button finally asked him what his favourite race of the day was. “One hundred percent the LEGO race,” the Brit joked. During the drivers’ parade, all teams raced with a life-sized LEGO model around the Miami Autodrome. “That was really great,” Russell added. “Maybe we should do that every race weekend. I think Lando Norris is still a bit mad at me because I hit him with my LEGO car. We’ll see,” he concluded with a wink.
