George Russell sends a veiled warning to his competitors. According to experts, the British driver has made significant strides in his Grand Prix performances this season, but Russell himself doesn’t see a huge difference compared to a year ago. The Mercedes driver does tell his competitors: ‘I’m not even close to my peak yet.’
With a top-five finish in every Grand Prix of the season so far, George Russell has once again earned the nickname Mr. Consistency this year. The Brit remains somewhat under the radar in the title fight between Max Verstappen and the two McLaren drivers, but according to experts, he has made a considerable step forward this year.
Unjustly, according to the Mercedes driver himself. “I don’t think my performances are much better than last year,” Russell begins in front of the media. “I believe I was already performing at a very high level during the final stages of last season. Starting from Austin (the US GP, ed.) actually.”
Road to Improvement
Russell, who last season had to ‘battle with a seven-time world champion every week’, sees no real big difference between his performances now and a year earlier. However, something has changed, according to the driver himself. “I do think that I am now driving at the top of my ability, and that I am getting stronger every season. And yet, there is still a lot of room for improvement.”
The Mercedes driver therefore sends a warning to his competitors. “I feel that I am not even close to my peak yet, and that’s great. I see many areas where I can improve, and that is certainly achievable. There can definitely be better performances to come.”
