McLaren Racing has officially announced its withdrawal from Formula E on Friday. After a ‘strategic analysis of the racing portfolio’, the British team has decided to pull out of the racing class after the current season. From 2027, McLaren will focus on their teams in Formula 1, IndyCar, and the World Endurance Championship.

McLaren participated in Formula E for the first time in the 2022/2023 season, but is calling it quits after three seasons. The team emphasizes that it will ‘fight until the last race’ for their current Formula E drivers Sam Bird and Taylor Barnard. Earlier this year, Barnard made Formula E history by becoming the youngest pole sitter ever.

“We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved in Formula E and the series plays an integral role in the overall motorsport landscape,” says CEO Zak Brown. “But the time is right to explore other opportunities. Opportunities that better align with the overall strategic direction of McLaren Racing. Including our participation in the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2027.” The American hopes to find a new owner for the Formula E team soon.

Triple Crown

With their exit from Formula E, the British racing team is shifting its focus to their other racing activities. In addition to the electric racing class, McLaren also competes in Formula 1, IndyCar, and from 2027 in the World Endurance Championship. The British racing team hopes to win the Triple Crown for the second time in their history. A driver or team wins this prestigious prize by triumphing at the GP Monaco, the Indy500, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. McLaren is the only racing team that has won the Triple Crown as a team. Of all current Formula 1 drivers, Fernando Alonso is the closest to a Triple Crown. The Spaniard is only missing the victory of the Indy500.
