Oscar Piastri does not anticipate that the upcoming stricter wing tests in Spain will have a negative impact on McLaren. The racing team has recently been in the spotlight again for their controversial rear wing, but within McLaren itself, there is hardly any discussion about the component. However, Piastri warns that his team’s lead over the rest of the field is not large enough to take it easy.
After the GP Japan, McLaren’s controversial rear wing came back into focus. Social media is circulating images clearly showing the rear wing on the MCL39 bending under aerodynamic pressure. Max Verstappen also noticed the McLaren wing, although the Dutchman prefers to focus on his own car.
‘Will be strong all year’
From the GP Spain onwards, additional tests will be carried out to limit the flexibility of the (front) wings. McLaren itself is not worried that they will suffer a disadvantage from the stricter testing policy. “I am confident that we will be strong all year,” Oscar Piastri says about the upcoming stricter tests. “I don’t think much will change.”
Piastri is certainly not the only one within McLaren who is not worried. “I haven’t talked about it too much with the team to be honest. That says enough. We’ll see when we get to Spain, but we have many races to go before that. I think we’ll be strong all year.” However, the Australian warns that McLaren cannot rest on their laurels. “We currently have the fastest car, but our lead is not big enough to sit back and not improve.”
