Who among us has a few million in the bank? If so, make sure you have tickets for the Monaco Grand Prix! During the race weekend in the principality, a unique piece of Formula 1 history will be auctioned. The iconic Ferrari F2001 of Michael Schumacher is going under the hammer – this award-winning car could potentially break the record for the most expensive Formula 1 car ever sold.

The prestigious auction house RM Sotheby’s announced this week that the Ferrari F2001 with chassis number 211 will be auctioned. This specific model is particularly loved by collectors – not only because of the iconic status of the car, but also because Schumacher used this very chassis to clinch his fourth championship. He won the Hungarian Grand Prix from pole position and secured the world title in 2001. It is also the only car with which he won both the title and the Monaco Grand Prix.

This is not the first time that chassis #211 has changed hands. In 2017, the car was already auctioned in America. At that time, this Ferrari of Michael Schumacher fetched a record amount of 7.5 million dollars, making it the most expensive modern Formula 1 car ever. Since then, the car has been overtaken by three classic Silberpfeilen from Mercedes and a Schumacher-Ferrari from 2003. The question is whether this F2001 can break the record again.

Charitable Cause

Unlike the previous sale, chassis #211 has now been thoroughly inspected by the experts of the Scuderia. The car has had a complete service and is fully ready for new laps on the track. The Ferrari will be auctioned on Saturday, May 24 at 15:15 UTC, just before the start of the qualification in Monte Carlo. This is the first time that a Formula 1 car is being auctioned during a race weekend.

“We are extremely excited to bring chassis #211 back to the site of its historic victory,” commented Augustin Sabatié-Garat, Sales Director at RM Sotheby’s. “It is a privilege to be able to auction this off during the Monaco GP.” Before the F2001 goes under the hammer, it will be displayed in the Paddock Club. A portion of the proceeds will also be donated to the Keep Fighting Foundation, the charity foundation of the celebrated German driver.
