According to Toto Wolff, Formula 1 has become so popular in China that it could potentially host two Grand Prix events. The Mercedes team boss noted that the stands were packed with enthusiastic fans during the last race weekend in Shanghai. The sport has been looking to expand into relatively new markets for some time, although there are also potential host countries that have not yet been allowed to organize a race.

During the last GP of China, Toto Wolff stated that he is open to a second Chinese Grand Prix. He referred to the engaged fans who had come to the Shanghai International Circuit in large numbers last weekend. “I was on the grid today and looked at the full stands along the straight and in the first corner,” he told the media present. “It’s great to see the enthusiasm and excitement among the fans.”

‘Engaged Fans’

“The knowledge they have here about Formula 1 is impressive,” Wolff continued. “They know the drivers and are excited about the championship.” Wolff acknowledged the global economic importance of China and emphasized that he would welcome a second Chinese Grand Prix, provided the fans remain as engaged. “I mean, if there’s a second race, why not?” he concluded. “It’s one of the largest economies in the world. As long as we keep the enthusiasm high.”

As of now, multiple Grand Prix races are only organized in the United States. Throughout the season, races take place in Miami, Austin, and Las Vegas. The American market is a relatively new, but particularly lucrative market for Formula 1. However, if the enthusiasm in China continues, it’s not unthinkable that the sport would want to expand there as well. Conquering the Asian market is, in any case, high on the agenda for the Formula One Management (FOM). Recently, CEO Stefano Domenicali even had a conversation with the Thai Prime Minister about a potential street race in Bangkok.
