Spanish racing driver Carlos Sainz, who will be racing for Williams this season, became one of the directors of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA) on Sunday, succeeding Sebastian Vettel.

The GPDA announced on Sunday that Carlos Sainz had replaced four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel as a director of the organization. The Spaniard, who has given up his place at Ferrari to Lewis Hamilton and is now with Williams, thus joins George Russell (Mercedes) on the board.

“I am passionate about my sport and I believe that we, as drivers, have a responsibility to do everything we can to work with stakeholders to advance the sport in many aspects,” Sainz said in a message from the GPDA on Instagram. “So I am very happy and proud to do my part by taking on the role of director within the GPDA.”

Alexander Wurz on Carlos Sainz

“A committed member of the GPDA for several years”

Alexander Wurz, a former Formula 1 driver and president of the Association, and legal consultant Anastasia Fowle are the other members of the board. “We are delighted to welcome Carlos,” said Wurz. “He has been an active and committed member of the GPDA for several years and we sincerely appreciate his commitment to this vital role.”

Last November, the GPDA made headlines by criticizing Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the president of the International Federation (FIA), after the latter had sanctioned some drivers for coarse remarks, and questioning the use of the fines that the drivers had to pay.
