Sauber's Strategic UK Expansion: Gearing Up for Audi Takeover in 2026

The Sauber team is set to open a new engineering hub in the United Kingdom, as announced by the team management on Tuesday. Traditionally operating from Hinwil, Switzerland, the racing team is preparing for a takeover by Audi in 2026. In addition to its headquarters in Switzerland, Sauber will soon have branches in Neuburg, Germany, and the so-called ‘Motorsport Valley’ in England.

Sauber hopes to recruit new staff with the new location in the United Kingdom. After all, several Formula 1 teams are based in the heart of England; Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes, McLaren, Williams, Red Bull, Alpine, Aston Martin, and Haas all have factories in the famed ‘Motorsport Valley’. Having its own facility nearby would make it easier for Sauber to poach talented engineers from the competition. The new facility is expected to open this summer.

Audi Takeover

The expansion is a key part of the long-term strategy of the Audi project. The Germans, who will be on the grid with their own factory team from 2026, want to significantly strengthen the technical branch of the team. According to an official press release, Sauber is currently looking at potential locations, including Bicester, Silverstone, and Milton Keynes.

Mattia Binotto, who was appointed CEO of Sauber Motorsport last year, stated: “We are delighted to be able to establish our technical center in the United Kingdom as a complement to our main location in Hinwil. By expanding to the United Kingdom, we remain close to one of the world’s most dynamic motorsport ecosystems. We aim to create a strong network in Hinwil and the United Kingdom that stimulates innovation and performance.”
