As of March 1, 2023, Susie Wolff has been the director of the F1 Academy, an all-female racing class. The wife of Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff reveals her ultimate goal for the feeder series, even identifying a female talent who could potentially reach Formula 1.
Susie Wolff was the last female driver to take the wheel of a Formula 1 car during a Grand Prix weekend. The former driver took the wheel at Williams for the first free practice during the 2014 British Grand Prix. In total, Wolff drove four free practices.
Nowadays, the Scotland-born Wolff serves as the director of the F1 Academy, and she has a clear goal in mind for the female racing class. “I want to get the F1 Academy to the point where it has a solid foundation and I don’t have to bang on doors to get things done,” Wolff tells La Gazzetta dello Sport. “The goal is to make it completely self-sufficient with brilliant talent. I want to stay until I’m sure it works.”
Path to Formula 1
The former driver had previously stated that it would take at least ten years for a female driver to reach Formula 1. Wolff now partially retracts this statement, as it could potentially send a negative message to the current generation in the F1 Academy.
Additionally, according to the Scot, there is another great talent in motorsport to keep an eye on. “For instance, Luna Fluxa is a promising 14-year-old driver who has been part of the Mercedes Academy for two years with excellent results. We cannot know if this talent will be the one to make it to Formula 1, but we must work as if that is the case.”
