This year, Lando Norris lost the title to Max Verstappen. Thanks in part to the speed of his McLaren, the Brit was able to compete for the championship for the first time. However, in 2024, his Dutch rival was unmatched, securing his fourth title during the Las Vegas GP. Norris can take comfort in the fact that he does come out on top in the so-called Power Rankings of Formula 1.
The Formula 1 Power Rankings are an unofficial rating system used to analyze and rank the performances of Formula 1 drivers. After each race, a panel of five judges takes stock. Each driver is given a score between one and ten, based on their performance – without taking into account the advantage of the car. These rankings are published on the official Formula 1 website and are separate from the championship standings.
Norris above Verstappen?
Based on all the scores from the past year, Formula1.com published the final report of the Power Rankings this week. Thanks in part to his victory in the final race in Abu Dhabi, Lando Norris has made a comeback. With a final score of 8.2, Norris finishes at the top – just above rival Max Verstappen. The Dutchman falls just 0.1 point short of his British competitor. Charles Leclerc completes the top three.
Although the Power Rankings have no direct influence on the season, many fans reacted indignantly to Lando Norris finishing above Verstappen. Looking at the statistics, it’s clear that the Dutchman won nine Grand Prix this year, stood on pole position eight times, and also claimed the championship. Norris, on the other hand, ‘only’ won five races and also stood on pole eight times.
