With the rising popularity of Formula 1, the demand for a dedicated Grand Prix is greater than ever. Numerous countries are lining up to host a race. In South Africa, where the last GP was held in 1993, they claim to be ‘one step closer’ to a race on the historic Kyalami circuit.
The Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit has initiated the process to obtain Formula 1 accreditation. Only if the track meets the standards of the FIA, it will be eligible to organize its own GP. In the past, Formula 1 has traveled to Kyalami twenty times. The circuit, located near Johannesburg, has always been the setting for these South African Grands Prix. Since the last edition in 1993, the premier class has not visited the African continent.
Strict Guidelines
In recent years, Formula 1 has shown renewed interest in a possible return to South Africa. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton stated in August that the sport can ‘no longer ignore’ the African continent. A lack of suitable circuits has so far halted all plans. Therefore, Kyalami has partnered with the British Apex Circuit Design to meet the strict guidelines in the future.
There has been a long-standing lobby for a Grand Prix in South Africa. The circuit management views the collaboration with the British company as ‘a step closer’ to an official return. “With its rich history in Formula 1, Kyalami is the perfect location to host international top events in the future,” a spokesperson said. “Kyalami and Apex Circuit Design both have the ambition to create an attractive experience for both spectators and participants. While negotiations with Liberty Media continue tirelessly, South African fans can trust that there will be a suitable circuit for Formula 1.”
In the run-up to the São Paulo GP, Max Verstappen was also asked about a possible race in Africa. Besides South Africa, Rwanda has also been working on its own race for some time. Moreover, the FIA award ceremony is taking place in the Rwandan capital, Kigali, this year. “I would love to have a race on every continent,” the Dutchman responded. “So it would be great if we could also race in Africa.”
