An unidentified Formula 1 team has been accused of cheating ahead of the United States Grand Prix. Over the past few weeks, several teams have lodged complaints with the FIA, alleging that one competitor is altering the ride height between qualifications and races. According to standard parc fermĆ© rules, such an adjustment is strictly prohibited. The FIA intends to implement ‘new measures’ to prevent this in the future.
As reported by the German Autosport, an unknown Formula 1 team has been able to adjust the ride height of the front bumper from the cockpit. This specifically concerns the front part of the floor that protrudes slightly from under the car. Between qualifications and races, when strict parc fermƩ rules apply, the height of this component can still be secretly adjusted.
According to the regulations, only the setup of the front wing can be adjusted between different sessions. “The aerodynamics of the front wing can be adjusted with the existing parts,” states the FIA’s regulations. “Teams are not allowed to adjust any other part of the car.”
FIA to Implement Measures
The FIA has confirmed that it will take measures against interim adjustments to the ride height. “Such adjustments to the front bumper while parc fermĆ© rules apply are strictly prohibited,” confirmed a spokesperson. “We have not yet found any indications that any of the teams are not adhering to these rules. However, we have implemented some procedural measures to ensure that the clearance of the front bumper cannot be easily adjusted.”
The FIA had previously investigated the so-called ‘flexi-wings’. In particular, the front and rear wings of McLaren were said to bend too much under aerodynamic pressure, reducing the car’s air resistance. The organization ruled during the race weekend in Singapore that the leaders in the constructors’ championship had to adjust these parts.
