Many drivers find the jam-packed Formula 1 calendar overwhelming. This year, a staggering twenty-four Grands Prix are scheduled, with numerous countries eagerly waiting to host their own race. Max Verstappen, the Dutch champion, isn’t too keen on all these new circuits. Instead, he advocates for the return of the historic Mugello to the calendar.
In the new Box Box Box podcast by tyre manufacturer Pirelli, Formula 1 journalist Tom Clarkson engages in conversation with prominent figures from the sport. The first episode features three-time world champion Max Verstappen, FIA single-seater director Nikolas Tombazis, and McLaren team boss Andrea Stella. Clarkson asked his guests which Formula 1 circuit they would like to see back on the calendar.

“Mugello, because of the fast corners,” replied Max Verstappen. “Compared to all the stop-and-go circuits, Mugello has a fantastic flow.” The Dutchman has always been a great admirer of the Tuscan circuit. In October, he completed a test day with the GT3 cars of his own racing team, Verstappen.com Racing. The reigning world champion drove several laps alongside his father Jos Verstappen and Thierry Vermeulen – a close friend and son of his manager Raymond Vermeulen.
Mugello’s Singular Experience Hosting a Formula 1 Race
Mugello has only once had the privilege of hosting a Formula 1 race. The circuit, owned by Ferrari, served as the backdrop for the so-called Tuscan Grand Prix during the 2020 pandemic season. At that time, Max Verstappen finished in third place, trailing behind the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas.
