Oscar Piastri is deeply honored by comparisons to Formula 1 legend Alain Prost. Experts see many similarities between the driving style of the Australian and the former French racer. This comparison isn’t entirely unexpected, as Piastri and Prost have crossed paths at Alpine.
Piastri has been in Formula 1 for less than two years, but he has already made a significant impact. The Australian’s precise and fluid driving style has not only earned him two Grand Prix victories but also numerous comparisons to Formula 1 legend Alain Prost. Piastri is certainly flattered by these comparisons.
“It’s a comparison that flatters me, especially since Alain Prost was one of the most successful drivers in our sport,” Piastri tells Auto, Motor und Sport. “Of course, I wasn’t alive when he was racing, so I don’t have the full picture, but from what I hear or read about him, I do see some similarities between us. Prost had a very fluid and rounded driving style. He was very precise in his work. I recognize that in myself.”
Prost won three of his four world titles during his time as a McLaren driver. Piastri hopes to follow in the footsteps of the French great and is already seen by many experts as a future world champion.
Tips
The similarities between Prost and Piastri are not just a coincidence, as the two have also worked together for a while. Former F1 driver Prost was an advisor at the French Alpine until the end of 2021, when Piastri was still part of the Alpine Academy. “I spoke to him a few times when I was still working at Alpine. It was incredibly interesting to talk to him and he also gave me a few tips,” says the Australian.
