Red Bull advisor, Helmut Marko, has a clear vision of what Red Bull needs to bounce back from their current performance slump. The team, which dominated the previous season, has been overtaken by McLaren to the extent that “a second place feels like a victory.” Marko believes that a new wind tunnel could turn the tide.
Verstappen drove to a respectable second place in Singapore, which, according to Helmut Marko, felt like a victory for the struggling Red Bull team. Thanks to the final fast lap by Daniel Ricciardo, and the championship point he snatched from Lando Norris, Verstappen can always finish second in the upcoming races and still win the title.
However, the advisor, speaking to Motorsport-Total, believes that “only finishing second is far too little.” Can Red Bull then turn the tide and start winning again? That’s going to be tough, but according to Marko, it’s not just due to the departure of a very important player within the Red Bull team.
“Newey will no longer be with us from March next year and is no longer involved with the current car. It’s a rhetorical question. We have a team with a broad base and that should solve this,” the Austrian explains.
Wind Tunnel
Marko knows what his team needs to address the issues with the RB20, and future Red Bull cars. “A modern wind tunnel would help us. Our wind tunnel dates from just after the Second World War. That naturally has disadvantages. It takes a very long time to heat up the temperature inside. The tunnel is outdated and I hope that our new wind tunnel can be put into use in 2026.” Marko immediately confirms that the wind tunnel is currently under construction.
