The FIA has released a statement in response to complaints about the alleged ‘illegal’ rear wing of McLaren. Following the race weekend in Azerbaijan, numerous images of the MCL38’s spoiler circulated on social media. It appeared to bend significantly under aerodynamic pressure, seemingly creating a mini-DRS effect. The FIA is ‘closely monitoring’ these movable parts.
After the so-called flexi-wings, McLaren’s driver Lando Norris rear wing is now causing a stir. Footage shows the part bending significantly at high speeds, seemingly activating a DRS-flap. “That must be illegal, right?” a user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote. The FIA has since released a statement about the mobility of the rear wings.
Considering Measures
“The FIA is closely monitoring the flexibility of all cars,” the message reads. “We reserve the right to request teams to make adjustments. However, if a team successfully passes all deflection tests and adheres to the regulations and technical guidelines, no further measures will be taken.”
“At this moment, we are assessing the data and any additional evidence that has emerged after the GP of Baku,” the FIA continues. “Possible corrective measures are being considered. This is part of the standard process in checking technical legality, and the FIA reserves the right to make regulatory changes during the season if necessary.” It is therefore possible that McLaren will soon be held accountable, or that the FIA will tighten the regulations.
