Oscar Piastri is ready to support his teammate Lando Norris in the pursuit of McLaren’s ‘higher goal’: the world title. This was his statement on the eve of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. However, in Baku, Norris may not need Piastri’s help. After Norris’ unfortunate session, Piastri is free to race. “All systems are go,” he says.

There’s always something happening at McLaren during a Grand Prix. Whether it’s a plea to let one driver (Piastri, Hungary) pass, or a duel between two teammates (Monza) that benefits a third party (Charles Leclerc, Ferrari). In Baku, Norris is in a tough spot. During his fast lap, towards the end of Q1, the yellow flag is raised, forcing him to abort the lap. Game over.

Meanwhile, Piastri demonstrates the capabilities of McLaren’s MCL38 on the super-fast street circuit. He secures P2, behind the unbeatable Leclerc. The Australian has a clear shot at victory in Baku. Assisting Norris, who starts the race from P17, doesn’t seem necessary. In the final minutes, Piastri takes significant risks for a top spot. “You get a bit closer to the wall, sometimes too close. But this track rewards bravery,” Piastri believes. “I’m happy with our starting position. All systems are go.”

However, he admits that this starting position doesn’t guarantee instant success. “Following is very difficult when you’re behind someone. But we’ll see what we can do. Our race speed is good. But,” he acknowledges, “the Ferraris are not slow either.”
