Charles Leclerc has emerged victorious in the Monza race, much to the delight of the numerous tifosi present. Ferrari’s team opted for a daring one-stop strategy for the Monegasque. Leclerc managed to maintain his tires until the end, securing his first win since the Grand Prix of Monaco.
At the start of the race, the Monegasque took advantage of the battle between Norris and Piastri for the lead, overtaking the Brit to secure the second position in the race. An undercut by Norris caused Leclerc to lose his second podium position. Ferrari then opted for a daring one-stop strategy, which resulted in victory for Leclerc.
“It’s an amazing feeling,” says Leclerc immediately after the race. “I thought winning a second time (in Monza) wouldn’t feel as special, but the emotions in the final laps were exactly like in 2019. I was actually just looking at the stands instead of the track, which wasn’t a good idea.”
For Leclerc, the Italian was the second most important race of the year, after his home race in Monaco. “Monza is of course a race I want to win every year,” continues the Ferrari driver. “Of course, I want to win many more races, and the world championship, but these two (Monza and Monaco) are the two most important races of the season. And I was able to win both of them this year, so special.” The Monegasque then thanks the present tifosi in Italian for their support.
Leclerc Remains Cautious
Does Leclerc’s victory mean that Ferrari is definitively back? “I don’t know, I think our update package worked very well in Monza, but whether that’s the same for the rest of the season? I doubt it,” says Leclerc honestly. “McLaren is still the favorite, but we have taken a step forward. And Baku is a nice circuit, so maybe we can do something special there again.”
