Joining Richard Verschoor on the Formula 2 grid in Monza is another Dutchman, Niels Koolen. The 23-year-old driver is transitioning from the American Indy NXT championship. He will be replacing Taylor Barnard at AIX Racing, who has been offered an opportunity to drive for McLaren’s Formula E team.

Niels Koolen is the son of former rally driver and successful businessman, Kees Koolen. In addition to Monza, Koolen will also be seen in action in Baku, Azerbaijan. “I am very pleased with this opportunity from AIX Racing to participate in the Formula 2 races in Monza and Baku,” Koolen stated on the F2 site.

“A few years ago, I had the dream of reaching Formula cars. Since then, I have been training constantly to prepare for this step. I want to thank everyone who has supported me in this race, and I am looking forward to my first Formula 2 race.”
