On Saturday afternoon, Oscar Piastri clocked the second fastest time during the qualifiers for the Hungarian Grand Prix. Despite a futile attempt to improve his time after Yuki Tsunoda’s crash, the Australian will still start from P2 on Sunday. This results in a front row lockout for McLaren – Lando Norris retained his fastest time at the Hungaroring on Saturday.
Piastri was pleased with the second fastest time in Hungary, although he was slightly irked to be outdone by his teammate again. “This result is, of course, fantastic,” he said about McLaren’s dominance on the first starting row. “I think it’s been a long time since we’ve been in P1 and P2.” It was a close call, and Piastri almost secured the first pole position of his career. Could the Australian have done better?
“It’s a shame to fall short by just two hundredths of a second,” Piastri admitted. “You naturally start to think about what you could have done differently. But it was not an easy qualifier, so this is a great result for the team regardless. We have a chance to score a lot of good points tomorrow.”
Will Piastri overtake his teammate and claim the Hungarian Grand Prix? “Of course, I want to take the lead tomorrow, but we have a championship to win. We’re going to play it smart, we want to make it a one-two finish. We just have to figure out who ends up in P1,” he concluded with a laugh.
