Team boss Fred Vasseur has revealed that Lewis Hamilton has signed a three-year contract with Ferrari. Until now, it was only known that the seven-time world champion was entering into a ‘multi-year’ collaboration with the Scuderia. Vasseur let slip that Hamilton hopes to win championships with Ferrari until 2027.

Lewis Hamilton shook the Formula 1 world in early February; it was then announced that he will be making the long-awaited switch to Ferrari next year. After twelve successful seasons with Mercedes, the collaboration with the iconic Italian racing team beckons. Team boss Fred Vasseur, who has played a significant role in the Brit’s career in the past, was instrumental in making the transfer.

Hamilton’s Decision to Join Ferrari

Following the race weekend in Silverstone, the 56-year-old Frenchman was interviewed by the Financial Times. He revealed that Hamilton will drive for Ferrari for at least three years. “He (Hamilton) had to make a choice,” explained Vasseur. “‘Where do I have the best chance of winning titles in 2025, 2026, and 2027?’ He concluded that it had to be Ferrari,” the team boss concluded. In February, it was speculated that the collaboration would only last two years.

‘Important Symbol’

Vasseur hopes that the arrival of Lewis Hamilton will attract more British figures to Ferrari. “We have good people at Ferrari, but I want to strengthen our team even further,” he continued. “Lewis is an important symbol for us. He sends a positive message to the rest of the paddock about the future of this team. Most technicians in Formula 1 are in Great Britain. If you move from Brackley to Milton Keynes, you keep the children in the same school and stay in the same house. But moving to Italy is a different story. It affects the whole family.”

The question is whether Red Bull designer Adrian Newey is also convinced. It is known that Ferrari would like to contract the 65-year-old aerodynamics guru, but there are more contenders. Aston Martin is said to be the closest to a collaboration with Newey.
