The fire that broke out in McLaren’s motorhome at the Barcelona circuit on Saturday has had repercussions for drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Despite Norris securing pole position shortly after, he admits it has caused some issues in preparing for the race.
“Let me start by saying that it’s nothing compared to the fire itself,” Norris emphasizes. “The most important thing in such a situation is, of course, that no one gets injured.” However, two people, including a firefighter, were treated as a precaution for smoke inhalation.
The extent of the material damage in McLaren’s accommodation is yet to be determined. Norris says, “Hopefully it’s not too bad. We couldn’t go back in there in view of the qualification, and that also affects the rest of the weekend. For instance, I had an extra pair of racing shoes and other items in there. I couldn’t and still can’t access them. We’ll also feel the impact on Sunday: normally, you prepare in your own space, but that’s different now.”
For example, Norris ended up in Zak Brown’s office on Saturday to find some peace. “I need that, to have moments to myself during a race weekend. Especially on Sunday. We’ll see how it goes now, I have no idea.” So, it’s a problem for Norris, although relatively minor compared to what could have happened due to the fire. “And I realize that, so we’re making the best of it. Just like in the qualification.”
