Fernando Alonso’s performance in Monaco was a surprising one. Starting from the 16th position in the world’s most prestigious Grand Prix, he crossed the finish line in 11th place. Despite this impressive feat, the Spanish driver didn’t score any points. He had anticipated at least a single World Championship point, having believed for more than half the race that he was in the 10th position.
Alonso explained his confusion after the Monaco Grand Prix. The Aston Martin driver was under the impression that he had scored points for his team. “I was confused,” Alonso admitted. “After the pit stops, I was told that we had ‘secured P10’. So, we were really fighting for a point.” What Alonso didn’t realize at the time was that Lance Stroll was actually in the tenth position.
Stroll’s Misfortune and Alonso’s Misconception
Stroll eventually suffered a punctured tire, ruining his race. Alonso, still under the impression that he was in P10, wanted to finish the race as well as possible for the team. “I thought, ‘now I have all the responsibility on my shoulders’,” continued the two-time world champion. “For 50 laps, I drove as if I had to defend the tenth place. Then I crossed the line and they told me I had finished in P11. So all that stress was for nothing! But well, it kept me going,” he referred to the uneventful race.
Pointless Weekend for Aston Martin
Monaco turned out to be a pointless weekend for the Aston Martin team and the second pointless race for Fernando Alonso. The British racing team is thus starting to fall behind in the championship. As the top teams disappear into the distance, the team is hopelessly fifth in the standings.
