The circuit is based around Governement House and the old city on the seafront. Baku's F1 street course takes in many of the city landmarks and is one of the longest temporary circuits run in modern times.

Flashback 2017

In the first round of the game Kimi Räikkönen and Valtteri Bottas touched each other, causing Bottas to damage his car and make a pit stop to replace his front wing and front tire. In the eleventh lap, Daniil Kvjat had to put his Toro Rosso on the side with bad luck, which caused a safety car. After six laps the race was released again, but because a part of Räikkönen's car fell and was dangerous on the track, the safety car immediately came out again. At the end of this safety car phase, Sebastian Vettel drove against a sudden slowing car by Lewis Hamilton. Vettel was irritated by the strongly slowing Hamilton and drove sideways later against Hamilton's car. Both Force India drivers Esteban Ocon and Sergio Pérez touched each other in a catch-up of the first, which meant that the safety car had to come out again. Eventually the race was stopped in the 21st round because there were pieces of kevlar on the track in several places and this was a danger for the drivers.

In round 31 Hamilton had to make a pit stop from leading position because the head rest of his car had come loose. Hamilton fell back to ninth place. In the same round, Vettel got a stop-and-go penalty of 10 seconds due to his previous collision with Hamilton and he fell back to seventh after this penalty.

Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo took advantage of all the turmoil and won his first race of the season. Valtteri Bottas finished second because he overtook Lance Stroll in the final meters of the race; Stroll rode a clear round and thus achieved his first podium position in Formula 1 in his debut season. Vettel and Hamilton came back to fourth and fifth place, ahead of Esteban Ocon and Haas driver Kevin Magnussen, both of whom also took a podium position for a short time. Carlos Sainz jr. Took Fernando Alonso in the final phase, who finished the first points of the season with a ninth place for his team McLaren. The top 10 was closed by Sauber driver Pascal Wehrlein.
