Oscar Piastri has responded to comments made by Jos Verstappen ahead of the São Paulo Grand Prix, who suggested earlier this week that the Australian McLaren driver should ‘bang his fist on the table’ and stand up for himself in his intense title fight with teammate Lando Norris. Piastri, however, denies any favoritism towards his rival.

“We are always very open with each other about what we think, for example, whether the right decisions have been made,” Piastri shared during a media session at Autódromo José Carlos Pace, better known as Interlagos.

In recent weeks, World Championship leader Norris has been on a roll, while conversely, Piastri has been plagued by misfortune. His last podium finish dates back to Monza (third place), when he had to swap positions with Norris following a slow pit stop. Verstappen voiced his opinion on the challenging situation at McLaren and the ‘Papa rules’.

‘Brings Tensions with It’

Oscar Piastri, in turn, responded to these comments. “We can stand up for ourselves just fine, and I feel very comfortable doing so. The team actually encourages us to individually defend our positions. It’s obviously a difficult dynamic when two drivers within the same team are fighting for a title that ultimately only one of them can win. That naturally brings tensions with it, but I respect the fact that the team gives both of us the opportunity to fight for the championship,” said Piastri.

He concludes: “We are already being encouraged to stand up for ourselves, so I don’t think anything needs to change.”
