The Formula 1 season reaches a thrilling climax in Abu Dhabi on Sunday, with three contenders still in the running for the world title. Who will it be: Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri, or Max Verstappen? This week, we’re counting down with three questions for well-known compatriots from inside and outside the sport. Today, part 2: Science journalist and natural scientist Diederik Jekel, known from TV and his theatre lecture ‘Seeing the Art in Artificial Intelligence’. “Max struggles on until the bitter end.”

– How have you followed the Formula 1 season so far?

“This year, I’ve been following it a bit from the sidelines, but of course, I still keep track. I particularly enjoy and find it interesting to follow the technology behind it, and to see what clever tricks they’re pulling now. What I’ve noticed is that Max’s absolute invincibility, which somewhat reminded me of Schumacher’s era, has been seriously challenged by a team that a few years ago you would have thought, ‘Well, they’re not going to make a dent in a pack of butter’. And what Zak Brown has done with the whole team is incredible. I thought, ‘Well, this is basically over for Max’, and that of course makes it exciting again. But Max’s consistency, that’s always what sets him apart from the rest. He just keeps consistently struggling on until the bitter end. And now it seems to be getting exciting again.”

– Who will be the world champion?“As a Dutchman, of course, I would be thrilled if Max clinches his fifth world title. However, I genuinely believe that McLaren and Lando, who is an incredible talent, should win considering their season performance. As a Dutchman, it’s natural for me to prefer Max’s victory. Yet, I must admit, it’s perfectly fine if Norris takes it. If he stands on the podium – which is not surprising – then he has truly won. I find it incredibly impressive what they have achieved with that team; I find it truly remarkable. So, I certainly wish Norris well. As a Dutchman, again, meh. But as a Formula 1 viewer, I think it’s also very cool for Norris.”

– How will you watch the final race in Abu Dhabi on Sunday?

“On Sunday, I will probably follow the final race in Abu Dhabi somewhat sideways while doing some DIY at home – which unfortunately really needs to be done. I will likely listen mainly via the radio, in the background, while I’m busy.”
