The Bahraini state investment fund Mumtalakat and CYVN Holdings from Abu Dhabi have fully acquired the McLaren team. The deal took place on Tuesday, valuing McLaren at nearly 3.5 billion euros. CYVN Holdings is predominantly owned by the government of Abu Dhabi.
McLaren itself has not disclosed the financial details of the deal. The two funds from Bahrain and Abu Dhabi acquired the shares – around thirty percent of the total – from, among others, the American investment group MSP. The investment group, along with other investors, took a minority stake in McLaren when the racing stable needed money during the coronavirus pandemic. The Bahraini Mumtalakat remains the majority shareholder, with a minority stake for Abu Dhabi’s CYVN Holdings.
McLaren at the Top
Four seasons after MSP’s investment, things are very different at McLaren. The British team currently leads the constructors’ championship, with a lead of 324 World Championship points over second-place Ferrari. In the drivers’ championship, both McLaren drivers are also at the top. Leader Oscar Piastri has managed to pull a gap of 34 points after Lando Norris‘s dropout at Zandvoort.
In addition to Formula 1, McLaren also has a team in the IndyCar, and will participate in the World Endurance Championship from 2027.
